Archived Dual Wielding

Duel wielding, in minecraft you can only use one hand to do everything. this limits what you can do to some degree. for instance if you want to look at a compass or a map at night, you first have to put a torch down then look at the compass. but what if you could hold a torch in one hand and a compass in the other hand, or wield a sword while still having a source of light. on the other side of the coin, you could not double wield tools that require two hands in real life (axes, shovels, ect.).

I think MC technically had stuff that appeared to be two-handed (maps, if memory serves?), but the underlying issue is that only one item was ever active at a time. One-handed vs two-handed builds on that. Currently we also only ever have a single item active, tho that may change at some point when we spend some time fleshing out "tools" more and how to exactly interact with the world :)

Right now left-click + right-click is all that's there, but we might get to a point where you can bind different items to different hands/buttons, or even have alternate use triggers. Just needs work :geek:

Yup!

I somewhat like the idea, especially the 'holding out the torch and a sword' part. Probably the best use of it would be if people are trying to be stealthy at night (in, say, multiplayer) or maybe if enemies are designed to not be able to see you unless really close.

How about something like this:

Two hand slots - primary, and offhand.
Two-handed items deactivate the offhand slot (although the offhand item remains in it ?).
Left click - uses item in primary slot, if usable. Otherwise attacks world.
Right click - Attacks world.
Item in offhand is not directly used, but can provide passive benefits (light, armour).
Mouse wheel/numbers - change item in primary slot.
E (or some other key) - Uses an object in the world.

Alternatively we can make right click use the offhand, or primary item if two-handed, but that means you cannot attack while holding usable items (like blocks)?

This also implies only one use per item, or at least context-sensitive use (could use a tool kit on various things for different effects) or prompting for different usages or something. Thoughts?

I really like that idea, another advantage i could think of about a two handed set up is more items to be crafted, say a shield to go with your sword which would increase any defense bonus.

For a good dual wield example, Read this.
