Has anybody gotten Terasology running on Ubuntu 11.10?

I made a quick try on a system with a low-power graphics card. Game loaded ok. I can see my arm, health and inventory. But 3D scene just shows as black screen.

Not here, tho I could try to run it on Fedora.

One fellow posted on Facebook just yesterday with an Unbuntu setup:

... Second, because of the shaders, I actually cannot run it on my weak GPU. (Intel Expess Chipset for the lose). Other than that, I've got an amazing computer. I can get as far as the menu an starting a new world (settings preset to ugly graphics and near distance) but then it crashes and leves me with one of those hs_xxxxxxx log files. I've got Java 6.30 in Ubuntu 11.04.

I can almost do it. The world will load after generation and display for a split second, then crash with this error:

This seems to be it, I have about the same problem with RedPower 2 for Minecraft when placing panels:

Hello xmagicx60!

Can you look in the log directory that should've popped up in the Terasology directory and post what's in the log file there? And let us know what your computer specs are, please, especially video card and exact OS :)

Interesting. From the game log you're failing to load OpenAL, despite it being bundled with the game now and forced in favor of any non-bundled version. Then the moment a sound generates inside the world you probably crash - that would be my going theory, anyway, not sure why sfx and music in the game menu wouldn't crash you if that was indeed the case, however.

Our OpenAL loader should catch that you're on Linux and add that bundled lib directory for you. I wonder if something quirky causes System.getProperty("os.name").equals("Linux") to return false? In which case the game will default to Windows and try to load a bundled DLL.

Furthermore it looks like Creative Labs don't offer a Linux binary download. I was going to ask you to try installing OpenAL separately to see if that works. If you're comfortable compiling source for your OS you could try that with the downloadable from http://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal.html - or maybe put the native linux files that come inside the zip somewhere on your system where they'd be picked up automatically (not sure where that would be, System32 or so on Windows, but my Linux-fu is not very strong...)

So I'm not totally sure that sound failure causes your full game crash, but it is the most obvious issue to go after first :)

Erm.... That was the first error. I found the reason for it was that Ubuntu has libopenal.so named libopenal.so.1, so the game didnt know where to look. All I had to do was make a symlink named libopenal.so, then those errors were gone. Or are you talking about something else?

The first OpenAL errors are caused by what I just described. After I fixed that, I get an invalid fram error when generating a new world. The pastebin file had the logs of every time I tried playing, so you were probably looking at the first ones.

Oh sorry about that. I tried looking through the whole thing, but just saw the OpenAL errors and the separate dumps like that, thought they were connected :)

Interestingly enough I just realized I had some of those hs_err_pid2426.log style errors scattered about on my system too, from very recent dates. This might be (another) stretch, but I wonder if something recent introduced a quirky bug. We found one potential in https://github.com/MovingBlocks/Terasology/issues/231, although that sounds rather different since it takes a build-up, it isn't instant.

Anyway - could you try out the previous stable build and see if that works? http://www.movingblocks.net:8080/jenkin ... yStable/5/

Odd, this time the exact same thing happened, the game crashed as soon as the world loaded, with no indication in the game logfiles, but no Java Error File was created either. o_O

This might be a long shot, but I'm going to try this under WINE, and see what errors I get then, to see if its a system problem or a Java problem or something else.

EDIT: Very odd, Same thing happened in WINE, the game loaded, although the menu graphics didn't, I could still click the buttons, when it got to the world, it crashed without a trace of trouble in the logfiles or Java.

EDIT2: After messing around, I managed to load the game from wine. I could see my inventory bar and move around, switching items in the inventory, although the pickaxe rendered wrong. The world did not appear, and I did not crash until I clicked something. This time it did spit out an error file. Almost identical to the linux one. Problematic frame. So apparently, It has something to do with loading and rendering the world. As wine could not load it, I didn't crash. Once I tried to interact with it though, I did.

Oh, and same problematic frame error for the linux version. To make the error file be created, it has to be run from the terminal though. (Unconfirmed)

It crashes even with the older stable build? Boo. I'd be concerned then that it might be something unique to your machine, like a poor interaction between OpenGL, your OS, and your video card :(

Got your latest video card drivers? Anything similar needing OpenGL work OK?

Minecraft, Sauerbraten, Starcraft II, Half-Life 2, Portal 2 (laggy), Portal....
^All work fine, Even under wine.

Erm, odd, I've only gotten that error once before, from minecraft RedPower2, placing any cover item often crashed it.

Oh, and my drivers are up-to-date.

Hmm. From searching around it still seems to most likely be a hardware vs OS vs OpenGL etc issue. Maybe you only crash on a very specific OpenGL feature, especially if that RedPower2 thing did something similar?

From your startup log the next thing usually would be spawning a GelCube, and they use some fancy translucency and what not:

Code:
Apr 19, 2012 7:49:37 PM org.terasology.game.modes.StateSinglePlayer initWorld
INFO: Creating new World with seed "pQaOoJcPsLqVrKiUrRvGzIlXpExQmPxD"

INFO: Spawning wild GelatinousCube at (-59.356705, 0.0, 65.49199)
Maybe we can add some more logging in that area to narrow it down further. Or you could try older builds / different Javas? But that might be a bit of work :)

Can probably add the logging bit in a day or two - not a ton of spare time these days. Thanks for hanging in there!

Somewhat of an update - another user reported an Ubuntu issue via IRC and I created an issue for it: https://github.com/MovingBlocks/Terasology/issues/236

Like rapodaca in the very first post in this thread he gets a black screen other than the interface. Yet has a laptop that should be plenty new enough to run Terasology

After some discussion on IRC poor Intel driver support on Ubuntu came up as a likely cause. I could suspect that's the same at play for the total crash listed here :(

On the plus side (maybe?) one user (Hakase on IRC) reports being able to play on an Ubuntu laptop - but one with a second dedicated 3D GPU. New user report is from a laptop with only the built-in Intel chip.

Wonder if rapodaca ever got that laptop working?
