It is designed to appear flat against blocks, like minecraft's vines. It will tile nicely one atop the other.

Cool - I think we need a new attachment style then, a flat billboard attached to a single block side

And even to an empty air block, to achieve this nice vine effect (in jungle biomes for instance).
